Educational Groups

Our offer

The Public offers a unique setting for learners to be involved in pioneering and ambitious arts projects. We aim to encourage learners to work outside their normal working environment and be creatively involved in both traditional and digital art forms.

The Public’s interactive galleries use interaction in a way that is accessible to visitors regardless of skill or ability. By using touch sensitive screens visitors will be able to contort and control digital art works to a fully personalised level. Our exhibits have been received well by specialised disability groups as it provides a superior level of sensory engagement within the realm of the art gallery and museum environment.

Workshops

Focusing on participation, communication skills and self advocacy our workshops have a core mission to make technology and artistic expression more accessible for learners. The Public hopes to open new doors in creative media by providing different, high quality learning experiences that complement and extend the ethos of contemporary learning.

Gallery learning

For education visits The Public offers a full range of interpretational activities based around the themes, shows and digital installations within our exhibitions programme. These activities are suitable for all ages and will be ever changing throughout the year.

Sensory experiences

Our sensory workshops are designed to continue the ethos of The Public’s gallery technology. By harnessing touch screen applications, projections and tactile interventions we have been able to design bespoke sensory workshops to SEN schools across the country.

Light drawing

One of our most popular learning activities is the process of drawing with light. Working well in both primary and secondary realms the workshop encourages several platforms of learning and peer group working.

Through the construction of a basic circuit using a 1.5v watch battery and singular LED lights students are able to create their very own light source.

After the creation of their drawing tool, students are then introduced to the process of long exposure photography as SLR cameras are specially placed on a manual setting mode (where the duration of exposure can be controlled, usually between 1 – 30 seconds).

In a darkened environment students are asked to make the connection with the LED light and battery. Once all students have completed this the capture process is ready to go.

To start with students capture an image with the duration of 8 seconds, giving them good insight in to the variation of both longer and shorter exposures. We then let their imaginations run wild, creating shapes, words, movements to music and draw around people and objects.
