Gandhi and Coconuts By Bettina Gracias

On Friday 18 and Saturday 19 February, Kali Theatre bring Gandhi and Coconuts to The Public.

Starring Sophiya Haque, better known as Poppy Morales in Coronation Street, and star of Bombay Dreams, Gandhi and Coconuts is a witty, playful and poignant play that blurs reality and myth, asking whether it’s better to be sane or happy.

Lonely and isolated at home and bored with the routine of her marriage, Asha, escapes to the India of her imagination. As Mahatma Gandhi and the Hindu Gods Shiva enter her fantasy world, the comic consequences create a surreal, heart warming and hysterical piece of theatre.

The beautifully written production by Bettina Gracias, an Austrian/Indian writer who has written 11 radio plays for BBC Radio 4, seven theatre plays and one TV drama, takes the audience on a captivating journey of imagination and reality.

The UK’s only theatre company dedicated to championing female writers of South Asian origin, Kali Theatre, produce witty, bold, and challenging material that is both engaging and insightful.

Gandhi and Coconuts will be performed at The Public on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 February. Tickets are £8 advance, £10 on the door.  Doors open at 7.30pm and the performance begins at 8pm.
