Roots of Metal
It’s often claimed that heavy industry helped to spawn Heavy Metal; among many others, the lead guitarists of Judas Priest (Glenn Tipton) and Black Sabbath (Tony Iommi) both served their apprenticeships at steelworks. This one-hour compilation of archive material brings you the sights and sounds of forges and factories across the Black Country, including footage of Bilston Blast Furnace and Hingley’s Chain Works in Netherton.

Saturday 3 September, Auditorium

2pm:
Promised Land of Heavy Metal (dir: Kimmo Kuusniemmi)
The unexpected success of Lordi at Eurovision planted Finnish metal firmly on the map. Kimmo Kuusniemi helped pioneer the genre there with Sarcofagus back in the 80s and with this documentary he returns home to make a persuasive case for Helsinki as the new Home of Metal; so embraced by the mainstream that it’s endorsed by the President, and even included in church services.

4pm:
Sound It Out (dir: Jeanie Finlay)
Nottingham-based filmmaker Jeanie Finlay has developed a reputation for off-beat documentaries including Teenland and Goth Cruise. For her latest film she has trained her camera on the employees and punters of Sound It Out, Teesside’s last surviving independent record shop, and crafted a moving portrait of vinyl obsessions. Jeanie is currently working with Multistory in West Bromwich on a project about happiness, and we’re delighted that she will be present after the film to talk about her work.
